Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. Advances in technology and treatment methods have more adults than ever interested in orthodontics. In fact, one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21.
Adult orthodontic treatment is similar to treatment in adolescents, but there are some differences. Adults may have some existing breakdown or loss of their teeth and the bony support structure around the teeth and may require multi-disciplinary treatment (with other specialists) before, during, and/or after orthodontic treatment. In addition, the bone loss may also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is possible. It is recommended that adult orthodontic patients see their dentists more frequently for check ups and cleanings to help avoid potential problems.
